What is a Guardian Home?
A guardian home is a family who raises one of our breeding dogs as their own pet. We retain breeding rights for a small number of litters, and after retirement, the dog becomes yours permanently.
Do I pay for the dog?
Yes — guardian families pay a reduced placement fee. This reflects the lower cost of receiving a top‑quality dog without paying full purchase price.
What do I pay for after that?
You cover normal pet expenses:
- Food
- Grooming (Shih Tzu)
- Routine vet care
- Daily supplies
Everything related to breeding is covered by us.
What does Briar House pay for?
We cover all breeding‑related costs, including:
- Health testing
- Reproductive care
- Stud fees
- Whelping
- Puppy care
What happens if the dog doesn’t pass health testing?
Breeding plans end, and the dog is spayed or neutered and becomes your pet permanently. No additional fees are owed.
How many litters will my dog have?
Typically 1–3 litters, depending on the dog and health results.
Do I have to groom the dog?
- Shih Tzu: Yes — regular brushing and professional grooming are required.
- Dalmatian: Basic hygiene only.
Do I have to transport the dog?
Guardian families can bring the dog to us or we can pick up for health testing, breeding, and whelping. We coordinate all scheduling.
How long does the dog stay with you during whelping?
Just long enough to safely whelp and raise the puppies. You’re welcome to visit.
Can I breed the dog myself?
No. Breeding, selling, or rehoming the dog is not permitted.
Do guardian families get priority for future litters?
Yes — guardians receive priority access if they want another Briar House puppy in the future.
Is this program right for my family?
Guardian homes are best for families who want a wonderful dog, enjoy being involved, and can reliably help with transportation and communication.
